One day I will have my dream upholstered bed, but when I discovered Tuba Club (through Lucy Williams) I knew this is what I wanted for my bedroom. It ties in with the plywood I used in my living room, creating a cohesive look throughout my home. The side tables that feature bungee cords are brilliant—they’re such a clever solution for our small room. I’ve always been a sucker for furniture that gives off a built-in vibe, and this design feels just right.
Other notes: I really love with the warm tones of wood, and plywood has become a go-to material for my projects. This will be my third time using it and probably not my last. In our restaurant, I covered walls and ceilings with full sheets of plywood, and in my current home, I’ve turned an entire wall into built-in shelving with it. I’ve found that birch plywood is not only affordable, but it also takes stain beautifully, making it a design-friendly option that’s accessible for everyone.
More inspo. I love Pinterest!
Before you judge this bed, let me share my requirements for the perfect platform bed. First off, I needed a base that’s no longer than 80 inches. With a small room, it’s crucial to have enough space between my bed and dresser—otherwise, I feel like a sardine.
I never really thought about bed lengths before, but it turns out they can vary quite a bit depending on the style of the headboard and footboard. After spending a Saturday assembling a bed that turned out to be 10 inches longer than my mattress—leaving me with zero walking room—I’ve definitely learned to always measure, and then, measure again, and then one more time.
Secondly, I knew I wanted the platform to be fabric instead of wood. I love the contrast it creates against the plywood headboard, and that was non-negotiable for me. However, finding something that met both my size and fabric requirements turned out to be a challenge.
I wasn’t a fan of the poly padded cover that came with this bed, but after watching an assembly video, I realized I could easily cover it with a fitted sheet. I’m so glad I didn’t skip the video, or I’d still be searching and my mattress would be stuck on the floor.
I ordered these roman shades with a blackout liner. I love the subtle stripe This fabric is the sandbar stripe.
Stay Lokal in Philly has Parachute Percale sheets and I ALWAYS think about their bedding. My fiancé and I actually searched for the tag on the sheets. It was kind of hilarious-just two people on a mission to find the perfect bedding. Such a cozy and homey stay if you are ever in the area. There’s something about the contrast of the warm wood and crisp white bedding that feels so clean and restful.
I love having a white bedding set; it’s such a classic choice. I’m planning to add a kantha or a quilt at the foot of the bed for a pop of color. This way, I can easily switch things up whenever I want to refresh the look. It’s all about keeping things versatile when your mind changes as much as mine!
For a quilt option, I’m thinking the one pictured above from Schoolhouse. Etsy is a great place for Kanthas.
I need a new closet door solution. Right now, we have a ceiling-mounted curtain that hangs over the opening, and it feels too bulky and intrusive in our small room. This example is perfect for what I need. Image via Frederic Magazine by Stephen Earle Design.
I’ll share the completed room with sources soon!
